Aabrekk Gard is beautifully situated at the foot of the Briksdalsbreen glacier, at the centre of Oldedalen. This area has been a popular destination for tourists for over 100 years, thanks to its spectacular nature experiences. As Nortrippers, we spent a night on one of the farm's three designated motorhome pitches, with the glacial arms of Jotunheimen as our destination.
On historical ground
Signe Aabrekk started selling food from the farm in the early 1990s. Since then, she has expanded her offering with accommodation and home baking from the farm's old baking cellar. Her son, Sindre Aabrekk, took over the operation in 2021 and at the same time became a Nortrip host. He now runs the farm as a dairy farmer with around 40 winter-fed sheep and is involved in logging in the winter. Signe still bakes, but now in the new kitchen in a building from 2005, which stands where the old farm building from 1895 stood. The old walls have been preserved, creating a lovely, traditional atmosphere.
A welcome experience
Aabrekk Gard offers dinner to order for both parties and overnight guests. During the coronavirus pandemic, the summer seasons have been extra busy, especially with tourists filling the area from Stryn to Loen, and many seeking campsites in the scenic valley. At Aabrekk Gard, we were greeted with hospitality and locally produced ingredients. Although Signe no longer has the time to bake as she used to, she recently picked redcurrants which she served us with a meal we had reserved in advance.
Local food and drink
The meal consisted of slow-roasted cow neck, a local speciality from a neighbouring farm, served with potatoes and fresh salad. For dessert, we had freshly picked redcurrants with vanilla cream - a simple but tasty end to a perfect meal. The meal was accompanied by beer from a local brewery, and Sindre is already planning to offer the farm's own home brew next summer, as well as obtaining a sales licence to be able to offer this to his guests.
Nortrip - simple and accessible
Nortrip is a European concept for motorhome travel that combines accommodation with local experiences. With the purchase of the Nortrip guide, travellers get access to free accommodation with hosts across Norway. The app is easy to use and you can easily find information about each host and their offerings, including farms like Aabrekk Gard.
Hospitality and shared experiences
Sindre Aabrekk, who has many irons in the fire with his farm, shop and overnight guests, became a Nortrip host in 2021. He has already had many visitors through Nortrip, and he praises the concept and the friendly guests he has had the pleasure of meeting. For him, Nortrip has been a great way to share his farm and local experiences.
